Yourself!
[Who saw that coming?]
It’s SO cliche to express the importance of loving yourself before loving someone else…but it’s also SO true. Yesterday I had an incredible yoga instructor who reminded me of the power of self-love.
Whenever there is a mirror in a yoga studio, I know my practice will be less enjoyable. Instead of feeling empowered by the poses my body allows me to do, I look into the mirror and dwell on how I look as I twist and fold. As hard I as I try to quiet my inner-bully, she can sometimes be relentless.
And just as I was having one of those mean, self-loathing thoughts, this instructor said a little something like this…
“You don’t have to call yourself fat to motivate yourself to lose weight. You can love your body AND still want to push it a little further. You can be thankful for what you have AND still strive to be better. I bet you’ll find that when you begin to love yourself, staying motivated will be easier.”
It gave me chills. Not only because she had the insight to know that I, and many others, might be feeling this way, but because the lesson extends far beyond looking into the mirror. Feeling sorry for ourselves is not only unproductive, but it makes the journey to meeting our goals more difficult and less enjoyable. This Valentine’s Day, I empower you to devote as much time to loving yourself as you do to loving others. Whether you strive to love your body, mind or situation a little more, spend the day expressing gratitude for the things you do have and love.
If you’re (lamentably) single, focus on all the other incredible things you love about your life! If you’re in a relationship, focus on the love you have for yourself as much the love you have for your significant other. It will make both of you happier.
