My friends often joke that I am the world’s most enthusiastic brand evangelist. When I believe in a brand, product or establishment, I literally don’t shut up about until everyone I know (and nearby strangers) get on the bandwagon.
It’s for this reason that I’ve decided to start the “Brands You Should Be Supporting and Why” series on Soul Cookies. Every few weeks, I’ll tell you about a company I love and why I think they’re worth supporting.
Well, I’m excited to share that the first brand spotlight in my series goes to THINX Underwear.
When I think about hidden gems I adore in the retail industry, THINX is the first brand that comes to mind. I own two pairs of their incredibly well-made underwear, and if I could afford to buy 30 more, I totally would.
THINX creates “period-proof underwear that protects you from leaks and keeps you feeling dry.” Every wear of their absorbent underwear can replace anywhere from .5 to 2 tampons uses. Not only is it more comfortable, but it’s also more economical and sustainable. Win, win, win.
Their website says they “look and feel like a regular pair of underwear,“ but I completely disagree with that. They are SO. MUCH. BETTER than regular underwear. I’ve had my two pairs of THINX underwear for over two years, and after many washes, they’re still in perfect condition; remaining comfortable and flattering.
But before I go any further, I feel the need to remind my readers that talking about periods shouldn’t feel embarrassing. While it’s kind of gross and physically uncomfortable, it happens to half the human adult population regularly. The only reason it feels shameful is because we (unfortunately) still live in a man’s world. And as for the “Ew, gross, WTF” skeptics, I dare you to find a problem with these underwear. THINX are sleek, black and ultra absorbent in every sense. You can hardly see, feel or smell what’s happening, and as far as I’m concerned, ignorance is bliss.
But I didn’t even get to the best part yet.
For each pair of THINX you buy, you help a girl in a developing world stay in school and become an entrepreneur. They regularly send funds to their partner organization, AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to sew and sell washable reusable clothing pads. It’s because of these funds that the girls can afford a pack of pads and stay in school every day of the month.
Oh, and by the way, here’s why that’s important:
-
A study at a school in Uganda found that half of the girl pupils missed 1-3 school days a month, or 8-24 school days a year
-
UNESCO estimates that 1 in 10 African girls miss school during menses, eventually leading to a higher school drop-out rate
-
In Ghana, girls miss up to 5 days a month attributed to inadequate sanitation facilities and the lack of sanitary products at school as well as physical discomfort

One last thing: THINX uses real-looking women in their advertisements, which further promotes female empowerment and positive body image. I can’t say enough positive things about their brand. THINX, keep doing you.
